It is crucial for rural communities to have good transport and infrastructure for families and businesses. Since being elected I have supported the reopening of the Skipton to Colne railway line, a 12-mile stretch that would connect Leeds to Preston. I continue to work with the Skipton East Lancashire Rail Action Partnership (SELRAP) and other MPs to push this project forward, as it would boost local businesses.
After making representations to the last Government about the landslip prone A59 at Kex Gill, I helped secure £56 million from the Department for Transport to build a new route with completion expected by 2026. I also pushed for a temporary business rates reduction for those affected by a recent landslip, and repairs have since been completed.
In November 2023 the previous Government announced £991 million to resurface roads across Yorkshire and the Humber - part of an £8.3 billion plan. North Yorkshire will get £314 million over the next decade starting with £4.7 million in 2024/25. I will work to ensure this funding is delivered by the new Government.
I also campaigned to lower the speed limit on the A61 after a tragic accident and met with local officials to push for this change. The £2 bus fare cap has been extended to the end of 2024 and North Yorkshire received £3.5 million to improve bus services. Further, Transdev bus company has introduced a new fare-saving scheme for young people in North Yorkshire. Under the new scheme, anyone under 19 can now travel on any Transdev bus in North Yorkshire for just £1 per single journey. Additionally, ticket offices in Settle and Skipton were saved from closure following my campaign efforts.
I will continue to ensure that rural communities like ours stay connected and that the new Government prioritises their transport needs.
