Julian met with North Yorkshire sporting personalities for afternoon tea in Skipton.
Julian met with Jean Elliott who is a former England football Lioness and was part of the 1971 Women’s World Cup squad in Mexico. England’s performances in 1971 prompted the English FA to formally recognise women’s football the following year in 1972.
David Jeanes also joined who is an English former rugby union and World Cup winning professional rugby league player. He represented North Yorkshire at Rugby Union, and he represented Great Britain in Rugby League. Next month will mark 50 years since his 1972 Rugby League World Cup win against Australia.
Thirdly, Roger Ingham MBE a community activist and local sports commentator based in North Yorkshire was in attendance. Roger was awarded an MBE by the Queen for service to the community, along with winning ITV’s ‘Local Hero’ award in 2005 and Craven’s ‘Sports personality of the year’. He is the founder of Skipton Athletics Club, and he is currently vice-president of Silsden AFC and has been chairman of Keighley Amateur Boxing club.
Julian said, ‘It was great to hear about all the sporting success that we have here in our North Yorkshire Community. We are lucky to have local sports personalities to inspire the next generation.’
