Yesterday, 5 September, Skipton and Ripon MP, Rt Hon Sir Julian Smith KCB CBE, gave an update to the Skipton and Ripon Area Committee.
The role of the Area Committee is to enhance the quality of life for local residents by serving as a 'critical friend' to policymakers and decision-makers, ensuring the public's voice and concerns are heard while promoting improvements in public services .
During his update Sir Julian addressed several key issues including the Winter Fuel Allowance, the upcoming Budget and potential changes to VAT on fees that could affect Giggleswick School. Sir Julian was also questioned about keeping Airedale on the Hospital Rebuilding Programme and the new Government housing targets.
Sir Julian confirmed that he would continue lobbying for the hospital's continued inclusion and, while supportive of reasonable development, expressed concerns about the size of increase in the North Yorkshire housing target.
Commenting on his update Sir Julian said, “It was great to update the Skipton and Ripon Area Committee yesterday.
“The big topic of discussion during my update was the Winter Fuel Allowance. Skipton and Ripon is the most impacted area of Yorkshire and I will do everything I can to make the case for mitigations on this policy to Government'
“Another significant issue discussed at length was housing targets and the continuing challenge of the cost of housing in North Yorkshire.
“I will continue to meet with the Ripon Military Heritage Trust to discuss their concerns around retaining the huts and development of a dedicated tourist/visitor site within the Ripon Barracks development.
“Overall, it was a positive meeting and I am grateful to the Area Committee for inviting me to update them. I look forward to working closely with local councillors over the coming period.”
