Julian Smith MP met some local farmers and representatives of the NFU to discuss local concerns and consider the exciting opportunities presented by Brexit.
Julian Smith said: ‘I was interested to hear from them on a whole range of issues, from food security to farming subsidies after Brexit. Food and farming is a bedrock of our economy and environment, generating £110 billion a year and helping shape some of our finest habitats and landscapes - we are very lucky to have so many innovative farmers in our area. I am also pleased that the Government has pledged to match the £3 billion farmers currently receive in support from the Common Agricultural Policy (CAP) until 2022. It is important to engage extensively with farmers and their representatives on what a new support model should look like.’
