Local MP, Rt Hon Sir Julian Smith KCB CBE, has expressed his support for the ongoing construction of the new A59 at Kex Gill, commending the progress made so far. With fair weather contributing to steady advancements, Julian noted the project’s milestones and reaffirmed his commitment to improving local infrastructure and road safety.
Julian said: “The progress on the A59 at Kex Gill is encouraging. This road is vital for our region and I am particularly grateful for the careful steps taken to protect local wildlife and natural habitats throughout the construction process.
“I am confident that as work progresses, the A59 at Kex Gill will become a safer, more reliable connection for everyone who depends on it and I look forward to continued updates on the project's progress.”
Updates from North Yorkshire Council outline the installation of several large culverts designed to channel watercourses beneath the new road, which will play a key role in preventing future landslips. These culverts are also equipped with ledges to allow safe passage for wildlife, such as badgers and otters. Hall Beck has been temporarily diverted to facilitate this work, with captured fish carefully relocated to preserve the ecosystem. Additional construction activities include extensive drainage work and the installation of concrete piles, ensuring stable groundwork as construction moves forward. Barn owl nesting sites have also been safeguarded by relocating nesting boxes as part of a comprehensive wildlife protection initiative.
Looking ahead, further excavation, piling work, and ground preparations are set to continue through the winter months. The project will also introduce new bridleways, footpaths, over 4 kilometers of natural stone walls, two balancing ponds, and extensive environmental schemes to enhance the local landscape.
Future updates will be provided by the council as work progresses, with plans for upcoming stakeholder events to keep residents informed.
