North Yorkshire Council have announced a statutory proposal for an additional targeted mainstream provision at Dishforth Airfield Community Primary School, set to launch on January 1, 2025.
The initiative aims to support up to eight full-time pupils with social, emotional, and mental health needs as part of a broader strategy to boost special educational needs (SEN) provision across the county.
There has been a significant rise in Education, Health, and Care Plans (EHCPs) - a legal document that details the needs and support that a child or young person with SEN may require - across the country which have increased by 92 per cent from 2018 to 2024.
The targeted provision is designed to complement existing educational opportunities, ensuring that children with additional needs can thrive within mainstream settings.
Commenting Skipton and Ripon MP, Rt Hon Sir Julian Smith KCB CBE, said, “It is great to see plans for additional targeted provision at Dishforth Airfield Community Primary School. The school is already rated as ‘Outstanding’ by Ofsted in all areas, even as the proportion of pupils with SEND is well above the national average, and that is down to hard work and dedication of the staff.
“The additional provision will provide essential support for children with special educational needs and disabilities, helping them thrive in an inclusive environment.
“It is important that we ensure every child has access to the education they deserve, and I commend North Yorkshire Council for this work and look forward to seeing the positive impact this support will have on students and their education.”
