Julian Smith MP is supporting the National Citizen Service (NCS) programme that will be taking place across the UK and in Skipton and Ripon this summer.
NCS is a once in a lifetime programme for 15 to 17 year olds and runs for three weeks in the summer, followed by a 30 hour community action project, with shorter versions available in the spring and autumn to ensure nobody misses out on the opportunity.
NCS brings together young people from different backgrounds and helps develop greater confidence, resilience, self-awareness, responsibility and skills for work and life. NCS participants have dedicated around 8 million hours of volunteering to their local communities.
Over 200,000 young people have already taken part in NCS and the programme represents one part of the Government’s commitment to Step Up to Serve’s #iwill campaign. The programme includes one week of outdoor activities, one week of building skills away from home and two weeks of social action where all the NCS experience comes together.
Julian Smith MP said: ‘The Government wants to build on the success of NCS so far and expand the programme to 60% of 16 year olds by the end of 2020. NCS participants can make a real difference both for their community, and develop their own personal skills. I would encourage all 15 to 17 years olds across Skipton and Ripon to look into local programmes and to make the most of this brilliant programme and the opportunities it presents.’
