Rt Hon Sir Julian Smith KCB CBE MP visited Kirkby Malzeard on Thursday, 14 November, to assess the progress of essential repairs on Main Street following a sewer collapse earlier this year. The collapse caused a sinkhole, resulting in significant disruption, including a full road closure that is expected to last until Christmas.
During his visit, Julian met with representatives of Yorkshire Water to review the ongoing works and understand the challenges involved in the complex repair process.
In addition to reviewing the works, Julian took time to meet with local businesses directly impacted by the road closure. He visited Kirkby Stores and Highside Butchers to hear their concerns about the ongoing disruption and discuss compensation measures.
Speaking about the visit, Julian said: "The sewer collapse has caused significant disruption for residents and businesses in Kirkby Malzeard, but the work being done is essential for the long-term safety of the community. I urge Yorkshire Water to get this job done well before Christmas.
“It was also important for me to hear directly from local businesses like Kirkby Stores and Highside Butchers, who are at the heart of the village. I will continue to ensure their concerns, and those of the residents I met, are addressed and that all possible support is provided during this challenging time.
Following his visit Julian wrote to the Chief Executive of Yorkshire Water, Nicola Shaw CBE, to press that he is keen to see the work completed as quickly as possible. Julian also asked for assurances that all residents and businesses will continue to be regularly updated.
