Rt Hon Sir Julian Smith KCB CBE MP has paid tribute to the Yorkshire Dales on the 70th anniversary of its designation as a National Park.
The Yorkshire Dales National Park was officially designated in 1954, marking it as a protected area of national importance. Over the past seven decades, the park has become a symbol of natural beauty, attracting millions of visitors each year while preserving its unique biodiversity and cultural legacy.
Speaking on the anniversary, Julian said: "Today, we celebrate 70 years since the Yorkshire Dales National Park. I pay tribute to everyone - past and present - who has contributed to the success of the park, from local communities to conservationists, farmers, and volunteers. Your efforts ensure that the park remains a source of inspiration, a haven for wildlife, and a cherished destination for visitors worldwide.
“It is important that we continue to work together to preserve these extraordinary landscapes, protecting the Yorkshire Dales for years to come.”
Julian also emphasised the importance of ongoing support for the park and the communities that call it home, encouraging greater recognition of the role rural areas play in tackling environmental challenges, promoting sustainable tourism, and fostering rural economies.
