Julian recently visited Sally Farm in Helperby to receive a tour of Dr Leon Furlong’s impressive 600 acre sustainable farm project.
During the visit, Julian learned that Dr Furlong had planted 3.5km of new Hedgerows and over 40,000 new trees. The farm utilises heat exchange technology and a Ground Source Heat Pump whilst promoting a low carbon policy for the running of the poultry farm.
The tour was also an opportunity to see the high quality of care for the hens. Dr Furlong noted that the welfare of the birds is the farm’s highest priority and that the nest space, feed lines, and drinker lines exceed all of the RSPCA’s requirements.
Julian Smith said “I was grateful to Dr Furlong for taking time out of his busy day to show me around his farm and teach me about how the place is run.”
“Our farmers are vital to our community and it’s great to see that Sally Farm is being run so successfully as a sustainable project.”
