Rt Hon Sir Julian Smith KCB CBE MP has responded to the latest claimant count figures, released by the Office for National Statistics, for the Skipton and Ripon constituency.
In January 2025, there were 1,035 people claiming unemployment-related benefits in Skipton and Ripon, representing 1.8% of the population aged 16 to 64. Among these, 160 claimants were aged 18 to 24. The number of people claiming unemployment-related benefits in the constituency is significantly lower than the UK claimant rate of 4.1%. However, the number of claimants in the constituency has increased by 70 compared to the same period last year.
Commenting Julian said, "While it is encouraging to see that our local claimant rate remains well below the national average, the increase in the number of people claiming unemployment-related benefits is a cause for concern. It is important that we continue to support those seeking employment and provide opportunities for skills development and job creation.
“I will continue to work closely with local businesses, education providers, and government to create opportunities for people in our area to get into work."
