Rt Hon Sir Julian Smith KCB CBE, MP for Skipton and Ripon, has called for a ‘positive decision’ in a letter to North Yorkshire Council Chief Executive, Richard Flinton, regarding the proposal to lower the speed limit on the A61 at South Stainley and the Bishop Monkton crossroads from 60mph to 50mph. The proposed speed reduction is set for final consideration and decision this Friday.
The proposals follow a series of accidents including two last year that led to four fatalities on the stretch of road in question.
Commenting Julian said: “Reducing the speed limit on the A61 is a crucial step in making our roads safer for everyone. Whilst the community wanted even lower speeds moving to 50mph would be a positive step in the right direction. I am hopeful that this decision will mark the beginning of further positive changes along A61.”
