Rt Hon Sir Julian Smith KCB CBE MP has received an update from the Environment Agency addressing the ongoing odour issues from the Arla Creamery in Settle. The letter provides an update on the measures taken by Arla to control odours and the challenges they continue to face.
The Environment Agency has been in regular contact with Arla since a meeting in December 2024, monitoring the effluent treatment plant closely. While Arla has managed to operate without causing odours most of the time, there have been instances where the treatment process turned anoxic, leading to odorous emissions. Arla has since resolved these issues but acknowledges the need for more sustainable and reliable long-term solutions.
Julian has been actively involved in addressing this issue, having met with representatives from Arla’s Settle creamery, the Environment Agency, and North Yorkshire Council. He has also engaged with local residents, parish councillors, and other stakeholders to ensure that the concerns of the community are heard and addressed.
Commenting on the latest update, Julian said, "I appreciate the continued efforts of the Environment Agency and Arla to address the odour issues affecting our community. While progress has been made, more needs to be done to ensure a long-term solution. I will continue to work closely with all stakeholders to ensure that the concerns of the local community are addressed and that we achieve a sustainable resolution to this issue."
The Environment Agency will be meeting with Arla's management for a progress update and will provide further updates following this meeting.
